Skin treatments at a glance
Skin treatments are the services on a med spa menu that work on the skin itself, apart from injectables and hair removal. The usual group is facials, chemical peels, microneedling and light-based treatments such as intense pulsed light. Some are gentle and quick. Others are more involved and come with aftercare instructions. Strength, depth and the device used all vary. A licensed provider decides what is suitable for you after asking about your skin and health. This site passes your consultation request to a provider in or near Sugar Land.
Who does the treatment, and under what rules
Depending on the treatment and on Texas rules, skin treatments may be done by an esthetician, a nurse, a physician assistant, a nurse practitioner or a physician. Rules on who may do deeper peels, microneedling or light-based treatments differ from state to state, and some require a supervising physician.
It is reasonable to ask who will do your treatment, what license they hold, and who oversees them. You can also ask how they decide if a treatment is suitable for your skin, and what happens if you have a reaction afterward. A licensed provider should be able to answer all of these plainly.
Three notes to make
If you only have a few minutes, make three notes before a skin consultation.
One: what you want to ask about. Describe it simply, where it is and how long it has been there.
Two: your health and medicines. Conditions, allergies, prescriptions, creams, supplements, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Three: your history. Past facials, peels, microneedling or light treatments, and any reactions.
Bring the notes, add your questions at the bottom, and hand them over if that is easier than saying it all aloud.
Questions about skin treatments
What is the difference between a facial and a chemical peel?
A facial is a hands-on service built around cleansing, exfoliation and masks. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin for a set time, in strengths that range from light to deeper. Peels usually come with more specific aftercare. A provider can explain which, if either, suits your skin.
What are light-based skin treatments?
They are treatments that use a device to deliver light to the skin, such as intense pulsed light or LED panels. Settings and devices differ, and some are less suitable for deeper skin tones or recently tanned skin. A licensed provider looks at your skin and history before suggesting one.
What if my skin reacts after a treatment?
Follow the aftercare instructions and contact the provider who treated you. They can tell you what is expected and what is not. For pain, signs of infection, blistering or anything that worries you, see a doctor or dermatologist. This site is not a clinic and cannot give medical advice.
